Reversing light probs on Audi 80?

I have an 1989 (F Reg) Audi 80 and the reversing lights dont come on when engaging reverse gear! I have checked the bulbs and they are Ok so I'm guessing that it must be the switch, but does anybody know where it is and how accesable is it? I have a Haynes manual and it doesnt tell you where it is and how to access it!! Many thanks in advance.
And what does "hgthgf" mean - Jack H?
 
Depending on the car, the switch can be outside or inside the gearbox. But I would guess it is inside on the reverse gear which is a spring loaded switch. As you put it in reverse, the spring is compressed and activates the tiny switch. My guess is the spring is broken.
