ringtones for vzw phones?

we just switched to verizon wireless. on my old phone i could use my voice recorder to just record a song i liked then i could use the recording as a ringtone. can i do this with a droid x. or any vzw phone? if not where can i get ringtones, that dont charge me, as in free
 
i don't know about the droid models but what you can do with the LG NV models (1, 2, 3, touch, and there might be a few others that i can't think of at the moment), you can send yourself any audio file as a txt with a sound file attached (or have a friend send it to you from their phone) and then once you receive the file back, you can then use it for ringtones or any other indicator (txt, vmail, etc.) all that matters is that the file is not too big to be sent.
