Robert Jordan fans, what did you think of The Gathering Storm?

Was Brandon Sanderson fit for the task? I myself really enjoyed the book but there were some aspects that bothered me. I thought the battle scenes were not even comparable and I didn't like the way he handled Mat (who happens to be my favorite character). What do you all think?
 
As far as Robert Jordan's general work goes, I thought the novel was rather sub-par. I didn't feel as close to the characters as in some of his others. It felt like it relied almost exclusively on plot elements to keep the reader interested. As far as compared to novels at large, I thought it was pretty damn good.
