I haven't fooled around with this setting for a while. I remember being able to set my alert sounds as ringtones for my contacts without formatting the sounds as ringtones. Does anybody have this phone for Verizon and know how to do what I'm asking?
I figured out the answer to my own question. You can use sounds as ringtones but it's very unintuitive.
Menu> Media Center> Music and Tones> My Sounds

Now click a sound name and then "set as". You can set it as both a ringtone and an alert tone.

Here is how

•1
Go to your cell phone's main menu by pressing "Menu" on the keypad.

•2
Select the "Settings" option from the menu. This brings up a list of ways you can change functions on your phone.

•3
Select the "Sound Settings" option.

•4
Select "My Ringtones" from the "Sound Settings" menu.

•5
Select the sound you've recorded from the list available to use as ringtones. The list will include tones that came with your phone and sounds you have recorded with the phone. If your recorded sounds are located on a memory card, you can access them from this screen by selecting the "Memory Card" and then highlighting the recorded sound.

•6
Make your tone selection and hit your phone's "OK" button to activate it. This sound will now play whenever you receive a call.
