what does it mean if you repeadedly scream in your sleep, or wake up crying? i have done this since i was a child and wondered if there was anything behind it

you may be remembering something in your sleep from when you were little that your mind is trying to block i used to then my family told me that when i was five a drunk relative got in my room and beat me up ask your family even little things in your past may have done this i Hope you find out soon

This is a simple case of "night terrors" and should not be over-analyzed or over-dramatized. It is a sleep phenomenon similar to sleep-walking, in that it does not occur during REM sleep (when vivid dreams and nightmares tend to occur) but during Stage 4 sleep, which is the deepest level of sleep. Like sleep-walking, it is also more common in childhood, but can continue into adulthood in some people.

When a child suddenly bolts out of sleep screaming or crying, appears unaware and unconsoled by offered comfort, drops back to sleep and has little memory of the incident the next day, you can see how "night terrors" can freak out the parents but have no adverse affect on the kid.

The cause is unknown -- one theory is that the body's alarm system has a somewhat faulty sensor. Think of a car alarm going off for no apparent reason. More ominous causes have been suggested, but no research has backed up these theories.

The term "night terrors" has also been used to describe "REM behavior disorder," where the brain fails to suppress voluntary muscle movement during REM sleep, leading to thrashing and crashing. The confusion in terms may account for differences in perceptions of the condition's severity.

Either you have some purpose in doing so or your mind has a permanent scratch. I do not know your present age. It is practically impossible for a person to have this as a habit, unless he is paranoid. You need an expert consultation.
You must be an introvert and are afraid of everything- this is a possibility. An analysis is impossible only with the above statement. Better consult a person of qualification, face to face.
