when i growl how loud am i ment to be?
and if im doing it wrong will i feel it hurt straight away or will it be later on?
i drink about 2 litres of milk everyday so my throat gets plenty of soothing
Listen closely to how your favorite screamer/growler is doing their vocals, take in deep breaths, drink lots of green tea with honey in it (make sure it's still warm when you drink it) then do it softly and at a slower tempo then the song until you can do that comfortably (it will take a while to build up) then slowly get quicker. One band I recommend starting out trying to imitate is Alexisonfire's songs from Crisis, since the screams are fairly cleanish on that record and aren't as strenuous on the vocal chords.
well, there is a difference between a scream and a growl. a death growl is meant to be medium volume, if its too quiet, no one can hear you, and if its too loud, then you'll burn out your throat. So you really just want to practice, and test your own limits, make sure to drink a lot of milk, or another drink that helps your throat and vocal cords. Practice quiet at first, then build yourself up to the louder growls, then should be easy to maintain a growl for a extended period of time. As for a scream, those are meant to be loud, and often high pitched, and so your vocal cords vibrate faster and so not causing the same kind of, for lack of a better word, damage to your throat. But again, soothe your throat with certain drinks and practice until you feel confident you can do exactly what you need. If you're doing either incorrectly, or in a way that your throat cant handle then you will feel it slightly right away, but the major part of the effects can be felt after a little bit of time, which usually presents as being hoarse.
