Should boxing copy some of what the UFC does when it comes to arranging BIG fights?
As most of you know, the UFC has only 5 weight classes and all of those weight classes are all regular weight classes. No super or junior, just the regular weight classes: lightweight, welterweight, middleweight, light heavyweight, and heavyweight. Boxing is different. This is the main reason why the UFC can have 5 to 10 BIG fights per year while Boxing can only have 2 to 3 (if lucky, maybe 4 to 5) fights per year. Another one, are the belts. UFC only has one in each weight class while Boxing has 3 or more in each weight class: WBO, WBA, WBC, The Ring, IBF, etc. Scenario: Welterweight is @ 145. No super nor junior, just welterweight. Imagine Manny, Floyd, Sugar, Bradley, Khan, Alexander, Berto, Maidana, etc. All in one weight class and all fighting for one title. How about Middleweight @ 160. Again, no super nor junior. Just Middleweight. Imagine Sergio Martinez, Pavlik, Paul Williams, Cotto, Bute, Andre Ward, Kessler, Dirrell, etc. All in one weight class and all fighting for one title. So, should Boxing change and copy some of what the UFC does when it comes to arranging BIG fights? OR just leave it the way it is? Please be civilized.
