My son just got a full ride scholarship to the college he will attend this coming fall. He now has a 1999 Ford Ranger. During the past year he has not had any problems, no tickets, accidents etc. I am so proud of him and I really think he deserves it. He does a lot for so many people, all he does is help and work, he really is a great kid. He has always wanted a Wrangler, and I think it is a good fit for him. But I do not know enough on the Jeep, all I know is that in past years they gained a reputation for flipping, this scares me. Please give me some feed back, thanks!

I just finished watching some videos of crash tests of the Jeep Wranglers. I would pass on the Wrangler and get your son a different vehicle. The top link is for the Wrangler, and the middle link is for the Ranger he is already driving. After watching them, you will probably want to be shopping for a safer vehicle for you son.

Sounds like a great kid. I would buy a good used Wrangler with some extras on it only because it will get dinged up by other kids. They only flip if your making a tight turn too fast, but you did state no tickets, accidents etc so I would not worry.

The Jeep has increased in width and decreased in ground clearance in the past 8 years, now matching most small SUVs.

The issue these days isn't stability, it's reliability. The Wrangler's track record from 2008 to the current model hasn't been impressive by any means. IMO, I'd pass on it.

I'm going to agree with Scott as to the merits of the Wrangler.

Let me add that many colleges won't allow freshmen to have cars on campus. A car can be a big distraction at a time when he should be focusing on his studies.

Congratulations to both you and your son on that scholarship! Best of luck to you both.
