Should I go for the BSN or ADN? L&D in the future?

Ok I am looking at becoming an RN. But from what I am understanding...you can't just be an RN? I want to be an L&D nurse in the future. Is an ADN the same as an RN? If so would I be better off taking the 4 year and be a BSN and have the degree. Or the 3 year ADN and have the diploma? I am really confused. I would like to know what an L&D nurse did...as thats what I think I am going to go for. If not that then a CDE. Thanks!
