Should I trade my car in?

I currently have a 2003 Pontiac Grand Am GT with 85000 miles on it. I owe 2k more then I will get for a trade in. My question is - Should I trade my car in for something more reliable? Something that is a 4-cyl. - Something like a Toyota or Nissan that will last me and hold it's value better. If I can keep my monthly payments relatively the same, but for X amount of more years - Should I do it? I'm thinking now is good because I am about to need two tires, front brakes, and to replace a motion sensor for my brakes. Thanks!
