Geography speaking, it falls along the islands of the Japanese homeland and I was always curious why this large island is under Russian control instead of Japanese. Russia has enough land, why not give up the island to the Japanese? Roughly 500,000 people live there, 30% Japanese, I believe it would fit with the other Japanese island.
