My son is 8 and a 1/2 months old and since he was about 4 months old he has screamed when he poops. His bowel movement is not hard so I am not sure why he screams. When I say he screams it is an ear piercing scream, I asked his doctor at the last 3 appts. and he says that there is no worry, but if it was still happening at his 9 month check up to bring it up again (which I fully intend to do) I am not sure what I can do to ease the pain or if there is an underlying concern. It shouldnt be a matter of a stool softener, I am just not sure. Also if it helps he is on soy formula, he has been since 1 week old.

What are you feeding him-because some foods can irritate their little butts, when they leave the body as poop. Any vegetable/fruit puree's that are high in acid could cause this. You say he has been doing this since 4 months old.You must have put him on soy milk for a reason, maybe his stomach was sensitive to the formula or breast milk which means he could be sensitive to other foods too.

This is a really big concern and can even cause a child to not go poop, which is even worse. My son is 1 1/2 half also, he had this problem and forced him self not to poop at all. Which he almost had to have surgery once. He now takes Mira lax every morning with his breakfast, that stuff was a life saver. You will want to request to see a specialist don't let the doctor get away with not doing anything.

I remember my daughter, who is now 2 1/2 had a hard time pooping and it wasn't ever hard and she wasn't constipated either. We never quite figured out what the problem was, but we didn't discover that she was severly allergic to dairy and soy until she was eight months old. We did have her on Alimentum, a hypo allergenic formula, but I think it was still bothering her until we finally switched to Neocate. I also think it is hard to get poop out when you are lying down. My daughter pooped the best when we put her in the walker type thing, I think the upright position helped things to naturally come out.

What you may see as a hard stool, he may very well indeed. Does he drink apple juice yet? Or even try a the jarred prunes. This will usually do the trick, or maybe add a little more water to the formula.
