Well, it finally happened. Stephen Strasburg has been shut down for the season by the Washington Nationals. After a shaky outing, the Nationals decided to stay true to their plan and end Strasburg’s season — despite the fact that Washington is very likely to be headed to the postseason.
Said Strasburg: “I don’t know if I’m ever gonna accept it to be honest. It’s something that I’m not happy about at all. That’s not why I play the game. I play the game to be a good teammate and win.”
When the Nationals came up with their plan, I doubt they had an idea that they’d be ending their World Series hopes by their own free will. But that appears to be what has happened.
Added Strasburg: “You don’t grow up dreaming of playing in the big leagues to get shut down when the games start to matter. It’s gonna be a tough one to swallow.”
With a record of 86-53, the Nationals have a 6.5 game lead on the Atlanta Braves in the NL. In fact, their record is the best in all of baseball. But that was the help of Strasburg, who has been one of the very best pitchers in all of baseball this season.
