...for a few moments.? I just bought a 2004 Chevy G2500 today. It's got 160,000 miles. On the way home there was this chiming noise, over and over... I dismissed it as the seat belt warning, or low tire pressure warning but I'm wondering if it's something else.
While driving along at 40mph it dropped into first gear, made a slight jerking motion (wasn't violent, just noticeable) and then was stuck in first gear. It would NOT shift up. I got home, turned it off for 5 seconds and tried again and it was still stuck. Then I turned it off for no more than 10 minutes and tried again, and it shifted just fine. I checked the fluid in the trans and it's a brownish color so it's time to change it... my question is, would bad fluid cause this problem? It doesn't seem like the transmission could be permanently shot just yet because it went back to normal so fast...what else would be causing this, potentially?
I haven't put 30 miles on it yet, and I won't drive it except to the mechanic until I fix this. Luckily there's a 50% warranty on it from a fairly reputable dealer but I hope I don't end up paying for half of a transmission. It's in great condition otherwise, the only other issue is that there's a coolant leak coming from somewhere on the right side of the engine bay that I'm going to have fixed. Thanks for the help!
