Iv looked all over the internet i cant find anything.
Iam looking at the 2.0 non turbo manly for realibilty.

Has there been any engine changes since the first Subaru Imprezas where made?
I dont like the new headlights and look on the 2001 models onwards some 2001 models still have the older headlights so i want a 2001 and older model.

I owned a 2002 Reg Impreza GX - non turbo - That car is now owned by my son and still going strong so I would recommend you go for one up to 2002 reg but no older.

Yes. they shortened the skirt length on the pistons in 1998 which lead to a lot of engine failures on 98-01 models. Non turbo engines weren't affected too badly, but some of the turbo engines failed, some as early as 60,000 miles.

If the engine has a noticeable knock when started from cold or a "clatter" at around 2800-3500 revs then walk away. Its a £2500 repair! I am talking fom experience.

Other than that they are great engines.
