Suzuki GSX-R 1100 not recharging battery...?

I have a 1996 Suzuki GSX-R 1100, the bike runs fine but wont start on its own because of a bad starter motor relay (aka Starter Solenoid). If I bridge the terminals on the relay the bike will start up no problem, but after a while it will shut off (even while moving), at which this point the battery is too low to re-start the bike. I charged the battery for 10 hours on a 1-amp charger and the battery is good, but its not maintaining a charge (like the alternator is not charging the battery while the bike is running). Is this because of the starter motor relay (solenoid), or do I have a problem with my alternator? I don't know much about motorcycles yet since I am new to the riding world...
