T-Mobile Pre-paid Gold Rewards question?

So you need 100$ to be Gold... so if i just buy my phone activate it then buy a 100$ card I will have 1000 minutes will DOES minutes last a year or is it the minutes I buy after reaching 100$? Do I have to do keep my phone activated? Do I have to use my phone at all?

I don't use my phone much and the 10 cents a minute, w/ a reliable company, no expiration for one year is very appealing .... whats the catch?
