Telus Mobility; unable to switch phones?

so i'm trying to switch an old phone with a new one and i entered the serial number but it says the old hardware and new hardware are incompatible... :S the old phone was an lg banter and the new one's an lg breeze... i know the lg banter's discontinued..does that have anything to do with it? i tried to click the 'add a new phone' link on the telus website when i'm logged into my account but it redirects me back to the same account page...so i don't know what to do. i sent them an email explaining my dilemma but they haven't replied yet (it hasn't been that long, but i'm impatient). any ideas of what to do?
