Tethering Nokia E71 to laptop?

I have a Nokia E71 StraightTalk phone. What I would like to know is if you can tether it to a laptop? I connected it to my HP laptop via USB cable and it downloaded the software and installed it but when you start the software it says no connection. Can you tether a StratghtTalk phone?
