The 2010 Hall ballot -- what do you think of the rookie candidates?

The Hall Of Fame has released the 2010 writers ballot, with ten returning candidates and 15 rookies.

The new candidates:
Roberto Alomar, Kevin Appier, Ellis Burks, Andres Galarraga, Pat Hentgen, Mike Jackson, Eric Karros, Ray Lankford, Barry Larkin, Edgar Martinez, Fred McGriff, Shane Reynolds, David Segui, Robin Ventura, and Todd Zeile.

Quick thoughts on who might get elected, who might get bounced after just one time, or what were they thinking when they put THAT guy on the ballot.

Eleven holdover candidates, that is.

Out of all the listed players, Alomar has the best shot of making it to the Hall of Fame in his first year. He's probably the best overall player in the list.

After that, it's a tough call. Martinez is deserving of a spot, but the stigma against DH's could hurt him. Larkin will probably bounce around for some years, as would McGriff and Galarraga. I could see McGriff making it in someday. He's got very similar stats to Willie Stargell. Galarraga is the dark horse. He's got some good stats, but finishing just short of 400 home runs could possibly hurt him.

As for everyone else, I just don't see them making it in. None of those other players really stick out in my mind as being extraordinary. So I'll go ahead and say Alomar's got the best chance of getting in this year, Martinez may take a year or two, McGriff is probably the best after that, and Larkin and Galarraga are dark horses.

...And, for the love of God, vote Bert Blyleven into the Hall of Fame!

I think it's the year for Blyleven. Dawson is also a possibility given a relatively weak rookie class.

Of those rookies, I think Alomar is the only one with a chance of making it on the first ballot. Larkin & McGriff will get in eventually, but not first ballot. Edgar Martinez will remain on the ballot for years, but not make it, or do the Jim Rice and just get enough support in his final year of eligibility.

Bounced after just one time: Appier, Burks, Hentgen, Jackson, Lankford, Reynolds, Segui, Zeile.

Able to hang on but without any real hope: Burks, Galarraga, Karros, Ventura

As for "why are they on the ballot", doesn't everyone who played ten years and retired five years ago make it on the ballot?

I'd say Alomar, Galarraga, Larkin, Martinez, and McGriff all have great shots. Segui will get bounced after one time because of steroids. Burks, Hentgen, Jackson, Karros, and Ventura will be around a couple years but I doubt will make the hall due to short careers.

Should get elected: Alomar, Larkin, Martinez

Will be forced to wait at least one more year: Alomar, Larkin, Martinez

What were they thinking: Jackson, Reynolds, Segui

The others shouldn't be given more than a quick glance, but at least they were pretty good players!

Alomar should get in and may go in on the first ballot.

Larkin, Edgar Martinez and McGriff should eventually get in I hope but I don't see them going in on the first ballot

Appier and Gallaraga have an outside shot but I wouldn't support them really or bet on it.

The others barely belong on the ballot in my opinion (although Hentgen and Burks were at least pretty good players for a few years).

Chances of being elected:

Alomar-yes
Larkin-maybe
McGriff-maybe
Martinez & Galarraga-no, but deserving

To me, the only joke there is David Segui.

Let's put in Blyleven & Dawson first.
