...is supposed to work? I know cold air sinks but not in my house. It is a 2 level house on a hill with both the front and back door lead to the ground. Half of the downstairs is basement, although only the South side is actually underground. The heater is off and I have to close all the vents and cold air returns or cold air blows up them. When the heater is on cold air blows out the cold air return vents. The heater fan is in there properly. I would replace the whole vent system if I can just figure how it is supposed to work and why it does not. Anyone can explain it simply to me or refer me to a website that explains it? Thank you.
It is just a furnace in the basement. There is no central air or anything like that.
There are 3 cold air returns one on the floor in the hall/entryway one in the living room and one in the rec room downstairs that leads into the back basement. Cold air comes out all these and the vents like a wind even though we are not using the furnace, and even when we are using the furnace cold air comes out the cold air return vents upstairs. We may not use the furnace at all if I can't solve this problem! It's about useless.
