The Marlin in the Old Man and the Sea?

Yes, this is a homework question. Yes, I hate those too. Yes, there is only ONE question. And no, I will not be posting another one of these.

What does this freaking fish symbolize? One of my friends said Christ because when he surfaces the water, his fins are spread (personally, I think this is looking way too far into it). Another said the Old Man because of his endurance, and how the sharks keep eating away at the Marlin just how the Old Man was slowly being "ate away" at out on the sea. I just thought he symbolized a dream, and no matter how hopeless or doomed your dream may be, you keep pursuing it. Or maybe I'm just being too blunt.

A little help here?
