The Mazdaspeed 3 or Volkswagen GTI?

Im going to buy my first sports car and i need the cheapest but still pretty quick. I was asking around and i only know people who own GTI's but would like to know, which car in most people's opinion is really better? i am going to test drive them as soon as i can learn to drive a standard.
When explaining can you please add a reason, its one thing to say one, its another to add why its better than the other.
