Theravadan/ Mahayana Buddhism parallel to Judaism and Christianity?

Is Theravadan Buddhism similar to Judaism in the respect that it was the first of the specific religion and only adheres to the first and original documents of the respective leaders/founders of the religion? and Mahayana and Christianity are similar in the way that they are like the "next step" and incorporate more documents from other sources?
