This cat is acting really weird in my yard, could it be hurt?

My neighbours cat has been hanging around in my yard/around my house all last night and this morning. He is vocalising pretty much all of the time, he kinda sounds like a crow, his meows are short and low, like 'mrow...mrow...mrow..' kinda thing.

I think he is fairly timid because I tried to pat him once and he RAN, but I went out and tried to go up to him and he only walked away very slowly, this is why I'm afraid he might be hurt. Does anyone know anything about cats??

Please help, I can't bear the thought of him being in pain out there with no one to help him..
Yeah, I thought it might be a female in heat, but it's a really big cat, so I'm not sure..
 
Are you sure it is a male? My guess is that it is a female cat in heat. They act really crazy when they are in heat with the vocalizing and prancing around. That is my guess.
