Today I was driving through a town in Monmouth County, NJ. It's Memorial Day weekend so the cops are running the streets like a bunch of Nazis. So I'm making my way through one of the main streets and I see this cop watching me from an intersection. I was within 5 miles of the speed limit so I didn't hastily press on the brakes or anything like that, just kept a steady pace and drove past him. Than he turns onto the main street and starts trailing me. Now I must admit my car acts like a ******** beacon for cops. It's custom spray painted Flat Black all over including the rims. It looks like something that the illegals drive but it usually doesn't attract too much attention. Irregardless, I've only been pulled over once and my driving record's spot clean. So he follows me to the next light, no problems yet until after I made a left turn onto a residential street and he turns on his lights to pull me over. He tells me that I was doing 31 in a 25 zone. No ******** way. First off, I've driven through that town before just like that and the driver in front of me was driving faster cause he was gaining distance and also drove past the same cop so I in that case he was just being a *****. He than tells me that my license plates are spray painted over, thus in violation. This is also a lie, but partially true because I did intentionally spray paint over the The Garden State portion of the license plate but the New Jersey text and the license plate numbers are visible. I'd be damned if he can issue me a ticket for covering a nickname, figuratively speaking, "The Garden State" doesn't make any sense. And as far as I'm concerned the only part of the license plate that needs to be visible is the state title and the license plate number, everything else is purely cosmetic. I've seen people with customized plates, everything from tinting to custom graphics. The most ironic part of it all is that I've been driving around with it like that since 2005, I've passed 2 inspections and it's never been questioned by anyone until today. If I pay the fine, I'll have to fork out about $50 and I don't think this effects my driving record so I don't have to worry about my insurance rate. Still, I think this could be contested in court since the part that was covered wasn't in violation with the law. Should I fork out $50 or should I try to get it waived in court. Any info and suggestions are appreciated. Thank You.
