my dog died a few months ago and my family is ready to get a new dog. we had our first dog for about 6 years before i came home with a cat. im guessing my cat was 6 months old when i found him so he was introduced to dogs pretty early. he had no problem with my dog. but my dog was a little on the senior side and she was pretty calm and chill. our dog that we are bringing home tomorrow is 5 months old and probably pretty hyper. im not sure my cat will be so accepting. he is used to a chill dog even though he tried to play with my first dog and she did not like that at all lol. the cat has been around small dogs before but he got a little freaked out when they ran up to them and sniffed him. he didn't scratch or hiss or anything thankfully.
the humane society gave us some instructions on how to introduce the two animals like: separate them in two different rooms. let them sniff each other between a closed door or a fence. gradually introduce them and keep the dog on a leash. are there any other tips you suggest when you have done this? i feel bad that i hafto keep my cat in the basement for a few days but that is where his litter box is and the rest of my family likes the dog better than the cat lol.
so how long would you suggest we keep them separated?
thanks for the tips
o also. sometimes my cat likes to be chased around the house. when he gets hyper he'll arch his back up and run away and i'll chase him for fun. is there any way to tell if my cat is playing with the dog if the dog is chasing him? lol i won't be surprised if you don't answer that because im guessing it would be hard to tell
i was already planning on feeding them food lol
thank you though
