To Ethiopians: Is this a customary greeting?

I live in an diverse area and where I live there are a lot of ethiopians. And when I go out, the women always look at me and smile. I was wondering if this is a customary greeting among women or is just like "hey your ethiopian too cool." I look ethiopian but I'm not. I was wondering the next time a woman does this should I smile back and say hi to be piolte. Just curious.
