Recently, rising high school senior Kenyan Drake had been badgered about his commitment to play college football at Alabama. Drake, one of the top running backs in the state of Georgia who has committed as an overall athlete to Alabama, decided he had heard enough skepticism about his future, so he put an end to it in one of the most dramatic ways he could think of: He had the Alabama logo shaved into his haircut.
As the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported, Drake didn't just have the logo shaved onto his head for a random barbecue, either. The Rivals.com 4-star rated recruit had the haircut done just before heading to Nike's "The Opening" event, a high school combine designed to gather the nation's top prospects to compete in offseason drills.
"I went to the barber and gave him my Alabama hat," Drake explained to the Journal Constitution. "He looked at it, and used it as the inspiration to draw it on my head. It really turned out great."
With Drake sporting Alabama's logo around one of the summer's most high profile events, he played the role of Crimson Tide talent director as much as he did top prospect at the Beaverton, Oregon nationally-televised event. The Hillgrove (Ga.) High star said he spoke to both top cornerback Geno Smith and safety Landon Collins to try and sell them on coach Nick Saban's program.
Of course, that's not to minimize Drake's performance at the event himself. Despite the fact that he starts as a running back in high school, Rivals.com Recruiting Analyst Adam Gorney listed Drake as one of the most impressive wide receivers at The Opening.
And, if anyone in Georgia was holding on to hope that Drake might back out of his Crimson Tide commitment for a future with the Bulldogs? He says they can all stop dreaming.
"I'm 110 percent [committed to Alabama]." Drake told the Journal-Constitution. "I'm sold on everything that Alabama has to offer. I'm comfortable with the situation. I really like the coaches, the football tradition and the overall atmosphere. That's my school.
"If someone [at The Opening] didn't know my name, they would say 'Hey, Alabama' to get my attention."
