My husband and I are planning a trip for next summer and would like to see visit Israel, Jordan, and Cappadocia in Turkey (we visited Istanbul on a previous trip so wouldn't be spending a lot of time there this time). I priced tickets on Orbitz and it's quoting me about $4000 per person to fly from Nashville (where we live) to Kayseri (the airport near Cappadocia), then flying from Kayseri to Amman, then from Tel Aviv back to Nashville. Yikes!
Now I'm looking into trains. There's an overnight train available from Istanbul to Kayseri and then it's possible to take a train from Kayseri through Syria to Jordan (we would probably stop and see Damascus on the way if we did this). We would take a bus from Jordan into Israel and then fly home out of Israel. The flights would then only cost about $1500 each and I'm sure that we wouldn't be spending $2500 each in train fare, not to mention that overnight trains eliminate the need for a hotel room for that night, which is also a savings.
My question is, is this a feasible trip time-wise and safety-wise? We were planning about 3 weeks. Does anyone have any other suggestions as to the best way to get around without it costing an arm and a leg?
