Troubleshooting the AirPort on a MacBook?

I recently bought a used older model MacBook (the first generation) which had been upgraded to Mac OSX Snow Leopard. While everything is pretty much in perfect working order, one thing I keep having trouble with is the AirPort. While I have no problem connecting to a wireless connection anywhere, I will sometimes lose the connection after a few hours, or even a few minutes, and I'm unable to recover it. If I try to reconnect, it will ask for the network password (even if it's already saved to my computer), and even once I re-enter the password, it will give me a "Connection Timeout" message. I'll try to fix the problem by turning the AirPort off, but once it's off, it won't let me turn the AirPort back on. At this point, I have to completely restart the computer, then the AirPort will work just fine until the problem occurs again. Also, this problem is not limited to a specific wireless network, but any wireless network. Having to restart my computer every time I get disconnected is extremely annoying. Can anyone help me with this?
