Yesterday my horse coliced really badly. Chance came to my barn in HORID condition (reallly skinny horid teeth and coat). Just a mess. I got him healthy and better and he was perfect. We taught each other so much. Anyways, the normal vet came out and told us to take him to the clinic. He was really bad. Thrashing and hurt. They gave him multiple shots of things to help pain and try to help move the manure through. We were thinking about surgery, but when they did a belly tap for his protein level it came back as a 3. Normal horses are in the negative and up to 1. 4 being surgery won't help. We decided to put him out of his pain. I just want to know we made the right decision. In the round pen he came and stopped by me and nuzzled me. In the stall he stopped and put his nose to the bars. I just don't understand why he was healthy and then BAM sick and like dying! He made ALOT of gas and hard manure which he couldn't pass. Why do these things happen. I know I am being emotion but he didn't deserve that pain. No horse does. How do I know we made the best decision? We decided to donate his body to science in a way. They found he has 3 feet of dead intestine and it was cutting blood circulation and caused an abdominal infection. So why do you think these things happen.
*They estimated surgery would have cost $8,000 and he would never be healthy again too.
