I am extremely prone to getting urinary tract infections. I got them when I was a kid, but now that I'm sexually active, I get them way more frequently. In 2001, I got three within a few months of each other, so my doctor prophalactically prescribed an antibiotic to take after every time I have sexual intercourse. I know you're supposed to "clean" yourself after sex and drink cranberry juice and urinate after sex - but none of that prevented the UTIs for me.
I also know it's really bad to prescribe medication in this manner. It's dangerous. Every doctor I've been to has renewed this prescription at my yearly check-up. But what's the alternative? Should I just never have sex again? Should I just get a UTI every other week? Please don't tell me to see a doctor; I go to the gyno every year but I cannot afford health insurance and thus, I can't afford to see a doctor every time I get a UTI...and no one has been able to tell me what to do thus far.
