The way they collect eggs is to cage the chickens above a trough and when the eggs are laid, they fall into the trough and get funneled to the processing plant. The caging is cruel, but the collection is not. So that would have to be your decision. Also, a lot of stores sell free-range eggs now, so you could still do that. Milking is done almost exclusively by machines now. The cows are herded into the milking barn twice a day and the tubes are attached to their teats. I have observed this being done and none of the cows looked at all uncomfortable. But with cheese you would have to be sure to buy kosher because most cheese contains rennet, which is made from beef.

Yes, dairy and eggs are cruel.

Cows are kept constantly pregnant, pumped up with hormones so they produce more milk, pumped up with antibiotics to counteract infections from constant milking. Their babies are taken away from them at birth. The male calves go to the veal crates (or the "lucky" ones might become beef cows), while the female calves will eventually join mom on the dairy line. There's also blood and pus in the milk--who wants that?

Eggs--hens are kept between 5 and 8 in a cage the size of a file drawer. Have you heard of battery cage eggs? They can't even move! When production declines, producers will "force molt" the birds by withdrawing food for a couple of weeks to "reset" the birds' biological clocks. Many hens die during this time. Baby male layer chicks, because they don't grow fast enough to become food and can't lay eggs, are killed at birth, often by being tossed in the trash to suffocate.

After production declines in both animals, they are sent to slaughter. However, a hen's body is so battered and bruised and has so little flesh, she typically is used for fertilizer, meal, low-quality potpies or nuggets, etc.

For information on how horrible the egg industry is, go to www.cok.net.

Eggs and dairy are actually crueler than meat.

You should look at this site; they explain the differences quite well.

or if you want a great quick read, check out the new bestseller "Skinny B----"**. I had no idea going in that it was about veganism. The book is an awesome read and they are right to the raw point! Good luck!

**I can't write the real title but it rhymes with ITCH**
