Voice Mail on LG U300?

I have had this phone for a very long time and i still am puzzled, how do you check your voice messages? I have like 7 messages and i don't know how to access it, I did what my friend said and he said hold 1, or dial my own number but i tried that and it said to set my voice message when im not avaliable, so does anyone know anything about it?
