A few months back I was driving my 2001 VW Passat back from a vacation. An idicator light came on saying "oil presure". It would come on an off. I was in the middle of no where at night so I couldn't just stop but the engine was acting fine but as I am going up a mountain the engine just loses power and shuts down. I had it towed to a local mechanic and he told me that the engine had build a sludge (apparently a problem with this type of engine. I do get regular oil changes.) and that the engine was now blown. I have been saving my money to buy a new engine but I was just talking to a guy who says that it doesn't sound like a blown engine because it didn't make any loud noises, smoke, or leak when it stopped working. He said that many engines have emergency shut offs when the oil pressure gets to low in order to save the engine.
Is this true for a 2001 VW Passat?
