My buddy has a 1976 fuel injected vw bus. The bus wont turn over properly, it gets about 1 turn then stops. We were able to get it started when we bought it by trying over and over and it drove home fine. We have replaced the starter and the bushing. When try to jump it after a while the jumper cables get very hot. we have tried several different batteries and sets of jumper cables, so I don't think that is whats making it hot. We have also ran our own positive and ground wires and we had the same problem and they got hot as well.
i dont think its the starter its new,and the solenoid is attached to the starter. and i tried the oil in the plugs and it turns... very slowly.

Sounds to me like the engine is seizing up... Take out the spark plugs and squirt a bit of oil down the bores... Does the engine turn over freely or very slowly.... Cables will get very hot if the car is drawing alot of amps to turn it over!!
