Vw Jetta Check engine light, Code 171 System is too lean ?

The check engine light does away every 300 km(around) then comes back 50km(around) later. a garage i brought it to said their was no leaks in the system they checked for posible leaks and their wasnt any. I dont know what the problem might be, It says 171. System too lean. i found some websites that have more detai but im looking for an answer from somone who might know what this code is usualy caused from.
