Warcraft 2 Battle.net edition - 1 vs 1 over internet?

I don't understand how to get a 1-on-1 game going with a friend over the internet using Warcraft 2 Battle.net edition. Do we have to have a Battle.net subscription? Or can we just go head to head ourselves, like with Quake 3, by simply entering our our IP addresses? If so, where do we enter the IP addresses?
