washing dishes... does it really save water?

I was curious, which method of washing dishes is more effective in saving water?

#1 - washing in a sink, by hand
or
#2 - washing in a dishwasher

I do method #1, and i use half a sink full of hot water to do ALL my dishes. I do not rinse them in clean water - i just splash them with the water from the dishes to get the suds off (i use an organic dish detergent so i'm not worried about residue).

Does anyone have any information or articles to back up which is more efficient in water saving?

i have information regarding ur question yes it does save water and electric to wash them by hand because think about it the average dishwasher has a rinse cycle, a wash cycle, and a dry cycle. now the dishwasher uses a contraption that has a spinner in it kind of like a sprinkler it spins and water comes out to wash the dishes it will do this more than once for each cycle. the heating cycle to dry ur dishes
uses a coil in it kind of like u will see in ur stove it will use electric to heat it up and then the water from the spinner will dry the dishes using a steam. this will in short cause a very large consumption of water and electric hope this helps :)

yes it is a good way to save water however that is seriously unhygienic to not rinse your dishes in clean water you should at least fill up the sink a little bit with clean water after you've finished to rinse
