...1/2 hour? We have water softner? we just bought 55 gallon freshwater tank and put our fish in it after water temp was good,and 4 of our 6 fish died.The tank smells horrible.We reused rocks that were in the bottom of tank before,but didnt strain them.Or maybe we added salt from water softner from bathtub??help?

I'm confused on the adding salt from water softener from bathtub part.

Anyhow, did you cycle your tank? If not, there's your problem.
