Weekly Sketch Thread -

I thought I'd start a thread here at MAP for those of you interested in art or sketching. I'd like it to be as simple as a one word theme or perhaps a phrase that we all draw or sketch to. Can be a from a sketchbook or a a piece of printer paper or even on a cocktail napkin... just sketch to the word/phrase and then scan and post. We can keep it martial arts oriented or we can play around a bit.

What say you?

Give me some feedback people and I'll start it off after I get some response.

Below is an example of some of the sketching I knock out when having a bit of time to kill. Would be cool if we got others posting their quick sketches as well. Or gone-but-not-forgotten Koyo would have enjoyed this type of a thread! He was well into his pen and ink drawings.

One interesting component of drawing is that it's at least 50% observation. Particularly when drawing from life and quick-sketching. Quick sketching - where the drawings are done simply to arrive the best possible gesture of the subject - is one of the key ways the train animators to be able to reproduce and exaggerate motion in the human figure and animals for animated films. I've always thought as a fighter and a coach that observation are key abilities towards being able to effectively fight and coach. So it's quite an interesting subject from something that is at first glance completely unrelated to sports or the world of martial arts.

Ideally I'd be interested if the thread could develop into a scenario where there are critiques and comments left for peoples work. Constructive of course! Sketching is a great way to destress - though often in our worlds it get relegated to wasting time. But again for me... the ability to observe details and movement continually inform my knowledge of movement and the human animal...hahaha ok before I start to go way off into outer space here...

Lovely work Mr TheJab.
As an artist myself I quite envy the ability to do quick sketches. It's something I've never quite got a handle on. I tend to have to really work at something to make it "click" while I see people crack off sketches full of life and gesture like it ain't no thing. Grrrr.

OK...so going with Slip's initial entry as a spring board I propose the first theme to be...
"movement"!
Or not. But I get a real sense of movement from Slip's sketches.

I really like the stocky guy on the punch bag at bottom left. I can really imagine how he's slipped the bag and has lined up his right hook. Weight posted on his right leg with his hips about to turn in. Almost between movement in a way.

Thanks man.
The stocky guy I was sketching there is Lawrence 'The Body Snatcher' Tauasa... pro boxer and ex sparring partner for James Toney. He's got Toney like movement... which is to say... slick and deft and agile. And it appears all the much more so because he's at cruiser weight.

In terms of quick sketch and gesture. It just takes practice on an everyday basis! That is the key thing... every single day... observation. In the through the eyes... bounces around in the brain and hopefully overtime travels down the arm and out through the hand onto the sketch pad. A very large part of it is building the habit. At least one A4 sheet of quick sketch a day. It' not a lot if you really consider it.

Yeah I've worked for a bunch of the entertainment studios and whatnot over the years. But in the last say 5 years not so much. Mostly just as a hobby. Though these days I'm slowly taking on more projects. Short attention span me.

That's pretty cool. The first thing I thought when I saw your sketches is that you must have a lot of hours of practice and some solid training. The next thing I thought was that you could probably get hired on somewhere as a professional artist of some type. All the best toward your pursuits!

Ok this thread made page 2! Woot... so with that... I'll come up with a topic and we start sketching! It's open to anyone no matter the skill level or whatever. The whole point is to get everyone sketching on a regular basis!

So without any further ado... the word/phrase for the first sketch thread at MAP is:

IMPACT

Whatever your take or interpretation of that word comes to mind while you are sketching. You can provide an explanation with your sketch... but it'd be good if you worked towards having your image/sketch be able to stand alone without any wording as well. It can be on sketch or a whole A4 page of them.

In order to keep things orderly... let's set a cut-off date for the first sketch theme. So... one week from today approx - Wed the 5th of October.

Get sketching people!

Probably because you are doing a 'Post Quick Reply'... click the button just to the right that says that says 'Go Advanced' and then go down to manage attachments.

Thanks. I just found what you're talking about. For some reason, I thought I'd read that posting attachments was limited to supporting members only. Glad to see I was mistaken.

My submission...

If advice is to be given on this thread, I really struggle drawing drapery. Clothing and such like. I can never get the way it folds looking right unless I just copy straight from a photo. Anyone got any tips?

Cool sketch, Moosey.

As far as cloth goes, that's a tough one. This guy has some interesting tips.

From what I can gather, he used to work for Disney and is a top-knotch drawing instructor for students pursuing animation art.
Pretty cool stuff.
