What age should you spay your puppy?

Long ago, I was told wait until after their first "season". However, at a well puppy check up my vet asked if I wanted to schedule her for the surgery (she will be six months in 2 weeks). She said that they are now spaying before they come in heat. Is this true for all vets or is this just her preference?
