What are my options for using my Telus Blackberry while visiting the UK?

The Telus website is a little confusing, but it seems to indicate that my Blackberry 9700 will work in the UK at rates of $2 voice, $25/Mb data, and 60cents per SMS. These rates seem very high. I have heard a little about unlocking Blackberrys and purchasing a European SIM card. Can anyone tell me whether this is much cheaper, how it works, and how to do it? Or is it cheaper (and easier) just to buy a cheap pay-as-you-go cell phone when I arrive there?
