What are phone skins?

I know you put them on your phone to look nicer, but is it like a case, or a sticker you put on it. also if it's a cover or sticker, can you remove it without damaging your phone?
 
It's like a sticker, but much thicker. It does not damage your phone to put on or take off. I had several with my old phone and removed them without any issues. Once it's off though you cannot reuse it.
