what are the negatives of advancing the timing?

On all the forums and stuff they say to advance the timing because you get more power.

I can't help but wonder why, if its that simple to just "increase the power", there has to be a negative or two attached to it, or the car manufacturers would do it out of the box.

Are there any negatives to advancing the timing?
 
The manufactures do it already - It's programed into the computer on newer cars & before computers, the distributors had a vacuum advance system. There is power available, especially if you have added parts to your engine, but there is also a bit of risk of adding too much advance & blowing a hole in a piston. It is especially useful if you increased the compression ratio in the engine.
 
A whole lot of them! For one this will cause detonation/pre ignition if advanced too far also it can cause internal damage to pistons,spark plugs, valves cylinder heads, and on top of that it will cause overheating,emission increase/test failure! just DON'T DO IT!
