ok, so i got some rats a few weeks ago and things are going fine so far. the only problem i have is that the cage seems to keep on smelling. i have a 3 level cage and its not the bottom that seems to smell. its the levels or the wires...
i use fabric scraps as bedding. carefresh is way too dusty and makes my ratties sneeze. it also starts smelling really fast. i've tried pellets and shredded cardboard and did not like anything. it either smelled or was dusty or the rats didn't like it.
i don't mind wiping the cage every day but like i said, it doesn't seem to help. the rats themselves smell maybe a tiny bit but that doesn't bother us. the cage is sitting in the living room and every time you enter the room that urine kind of smell hits you... i'm scared of having company...
by the way, my rats are female and i got 2. i have a littler tray but i don't think they use it. should i have a litter tray on each level?
so what can i do against that smell? is there some kind of spray that is save to be used around rats? my concern is that something must be soiled all the time if it smells that bad... can it be that their urine sprays outside the cage? or is that crazy....
what is your specific cage cleaning habit? how did you get your rat to use the litter box? i once read that they wouldn't use it to pee in it any way, just for #2... anyway,
thanks for the help...
