what can you do with a divx certified device?

well i have a in car entertainment system, ps3 and mobile all are certified by divx but i dont really understand what is the advantages of having this features and im not really sure what to do with it. i heard you have to download divx stuff on your pc and then you can put videos on the device. is this true?
 
Generally, you are right.

DivX is a form of video codec, usually in a container (i.e. a file type) of AVI. These are common video files and anything DivX compatible can play these files straight off the bat and without any conversion.
