What could be making my car skip?

I drive a mercury sable with about 72,000 miles on it. Anyway, I've noticed it is skipping. It does it when driving down the road and also when sitting still, like at a traffic light or drive thru. I did it a couple times this past saturday and didn't notice it again until today. It was doing it a lot today. What could it be? And is there anything serious I can rule out?
 
Skipping? You mean the engine is not firing on all cylinders all the time? Probably spark plug, spark plug wire, distributor, or mass airflow sensor. When was the last time you had it in for a tune up?
 
It could be a broken/missing gasket. take it to the shop. being safe is important!
 
probably the music u r listening to..maybe water in the fuel, try putting some liquid heat in the gas tank, most auto supply stores carry it

I'm not sure what you mean by skipping. You mean the engine is cutting out, or your car is suddenly jumping forward randomly? Care to explain more, and maybe I can help.
