Greenday,
The typical person that starts lifting weights almost doubles their strength in the first few months. That's because of changes within the muscle adapting to the new work. This is before any significant growth occurs. As a woman, you will not get significant growth - ever. It takes male hormones for that. The huge ripped females on tv shows now and then have taken steroids. If you want to see a really healthy, fit female who is also extraordinarily beautiful, take a hard look at Jennifer Garner (from the show Alias), and look at her arms and legs. They are strong as hell, but totally sexy. She does martial arts and weight lifting.
Lifting weights will strengthen your bones and increase their density. This will protect you from osteoarthritis later in life. It will make a huge difference (as in preventing it altogether if you are diligent and have a good diet as well).
This will make you healthier. You'll get much hungrier. Your skin will glow with health. Eat what your body needs. It's using the calories. It needs the nutrients to build and repair. Eat lean meats, fish, yogurt, and fresh or steamed vegetables and fruits. Eat lots of nuts. Steak and burgers are ok but not all the time. In fact, most things are ok in moderation, particularly if you are already thin and trying to gain. If you eat healthy food 90% of the time, and you are burning a lot of calories, a cupcake is not going to kill you. Too many people that are into fitness are like religious zealots about it. Trust me, you can be super fit, have a super sexy shape, and be strong and confident without weighing out your tofu and counting your almonds every day. I know this from personal experience of my own and of many friends.
There are so many misconceptions about weight lifting and size and women that it's disturbing but it's one of the best things you can do for yourself. Get started by going to a FEMALE fitness instructor who will respect your limits and get you started in a healthy, non-injurious workout habit.
Next topic - you need to be able to defend yourself. When you get fit, if you aren't yet, take American style karate lessons. 5 or 10 self defense courses will get you started but won't change your mindset, your reflexes, your body's speed, and your comfort with physical confrontation. 2 years of karate will turn you into someone that can kick my butt. Fyi - I'm a 6'4" male, 250 lbs. I used to lift a lot, and took karate for a couple of years (a long time ago). One of the high school gals in class started as a kid. She was a blackbelt. She could beat me at sparring (fake fighting) any time she wanted. 1 year is a great start. 2 will change your perception of yourself into one of confidence and strength because you will KNOW what you can do.
What are you talking about? You want to know what foods make you fair (as in opposite of tan)? And you think this will help you defend yourself...?
So confused.
